Fantasy Football 2008

leave a comment »

I am the winner in the fantasy football league organized by some enterprising students at Weber State University. I peaked early in the sesson and lost quite a few in a row at the end but finished the playoffs on a high note.

Trackhoe Accident

One of my students sent this to me today. His company had a small problem getting a trackhoe under an overpass. It hit the overpass and the chains broke and the hoe went flying.

I am voting for Joe

leave a comment »

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
(CNN) — Joe Biden’s off-the-cuff remarks on the trail have at times taken the Obama campaign off-message, but the Delaware senator’s latest riff just may have landed him in hot water with voters — and die hard football fans — in a key battleground state.
Speaking to members of the University of Delaware football team Friday morning, the Democratic VP candidate said he thinks the Fightin Blue Hens (1-1 this season) could thrash a certain team from Ohio.
“I was out in Ohio,” he said while fiddling with a football in his hands. “I told the folks in Ohio that we’d kick Ohio State’s ass!”
If Joe had said this in Michigan it might have won him and Obama the election.

Shark Teeth

leave a comment »

I had a little problem today. I found a leak in the seal on our water filter. It was dripping so I thought I would replace the o-ring (seal) and then everything would be fine. It so happened that the new o-ring did not stop the leak. It was getting late and the threads on the filter where not opposing threads so to remove it I had to either use a torch to get it off and then replace it or I had to break the filter and figure out what to do later. The second option required a jumper or connection between the threaded copper piping.

I went down to the local hardware store and they suggested this no-weld solution. Simply thread the female side of the connectors into the existing male ends and then push in the copper pipe in between and wow. I was a bit hesitant but one of my students had asked me about this product a few weeks ago. I told him I had never heard of it. After using it (shark teeth) and seeing how simple it is it did remind me of some of the connections I used last summer while I worked in the underground utility business. We used both poly and copper and the connection process was very similar. Check out the photos. Besides a bunch of water down my backside it went in fast and leak free. To disconnect it you need a special plastic horseshoe shaped tool. Not a real big expense.

Front Runner

leave a comment »

I have started taking the Front Runner from Farmington to Odgen to get to work. I have been pleasantly surprised at how nice it is to ride the train. It is almost like living in a real city…almost. The Front Runner has WiFi which allows me to get work done while traveling. It does take more time than driving but I get a EDPASS and can get work so I have saved both time and money in the process. Thumbs up to the Front Runner the first good experience I have had with UTA services.

During the summer I would take the UTA bus up to campus but I got left several times when the last bus of the day freelanced and did not drive through campus during construction. They also did not follow the detours when they occurred. I actually took another bus to another stop and let the driver know people where waiting for the bus and showed him the detour. He pretty much told me he was not interested in picking them up and would not change his route to follow the detour. I complained but it did not help because he did the same thing until the detour ended. The particular UTA drive was a complete idiot.
